It was announced today that critically acclaimed actor Robert Downey Jr. will be playing the role of Tony Stark in director Jon Favreau's big screen treatment of Marvel Comics' IRON MAN.
The announcement was confirmed by Favreau on his Myspace IRON MAN group today. Jon has this to say:
"It is true. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. I am about as excited as I can be. I saw what he can do and he is extremely enthusiastic about playing Stark. I can say with absolute certainty that there is no better choice. The humor and emotional dimension he brings truly raises the bar on this project. Get ready."
Now usually when someone is announced to play a well-known superhero on the big screen, I'm immediately skeptical about whether or not that person can pull it off. But this is one casting decision that I think makes PERFECT sense. Robert Downey Jr. is easily one of the most competent actors working in Hollywood today. Whether you like his films or not, he consistently brings 110% to everything he's in. I think you also have to appreciate the irony of casting an actor with a history of substance abuse problems to play a hero who's biggest enemy is alcoholism. That's not a jab at Robert, but rather one of those things that would lead you to believe he can put a very personal spin on this character. I sincerely can't wait to see what Jon and Robert put together with this film. IRON MAN has always been a favorite character of mine, and I've always found him interesting. In the hands of the right people, this could truly be great. It seems both the director and star are very enthusiastic about the project, so let's hope that comes across on screen.
