While most people identify DC's trademark hero Green Lantern with the alter-ego of Hal jordan, the first man to harness the powerful ring was Alan Scott. The original Green Lantern made his first appearance in ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16, and soon thereafter received his own title. Released in the fall of 1941, the first GREEN LANTERN comic (as with ALL-AMERICAN #16) was written by Bill Finger and illustrated by co-creator Martin Nodell. The talented artist left DC in 1947 to work for Timely, illustrating books like CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE HUMAN TORCH, and SUB-MARINER. In 1950, Nodell left the comic book industry, and entered the advertising industry. Martin retired in 1976, and was very much out of the public eye until the late eighties, when he did a few pages for DC, and was suddenly very much back in the eyes of comic fans. Sometimes referred to as "Mart" or "Marty", Nodell became a staple guest at several conventions in recent years. His last credited work was published in GREEN LANTERN #19, which was released in 1991. Oddly enough, Marty was 91 when he died Saturday, December 9th. The industry has lost another legend, and he will be missed. Written by Mark Walters
