Lionsgate and the Weinstein Co. will domestically co-release the action epic based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king. Rob Minkoff will direct from an original screenplay by John Fusco which revolves around an American teenager who discovers the king's legendary stick weapon in a pawn shop. Transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors fighting to free the imprisoned king. Li plays two roles, the monkey king and the silent monk, whilst Chan is the monk T'sa-Ho. Wo Ping and Peter Pau will serve as action choreographer and director of photography respectively. Principal photography is scheduled to begin May 2 in China. A September 2008 US release is planned.
