SOURCEYes, this surprised me, too. Personally, I'm not sure what to think. This will be the first time any "Star Trek" director has helmed a film in what many consider an "opposing" franchise. The only other news at this point has been about Michael Arndt writing the screenplay. His previous efforts include LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, OBLIVION, and the Disney films BRAVE and TOY STORY 3. He also wrote the upcoming HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE.

Not sure what to think about that. I have mixed feelings on his work.

I was never a loyal fan of ALIAS, and his first STAR TREK film didn't impress me at all. In fact, I was largely insulted by it, especially Kirk bedding the green woman in her underwear. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III was okay, but the others are much better.
I'm really disappointed that Disney wants to do an original story for this, because I'd love to see adaptations of the Thrawn trilogy. Disney's effects work with TRON: LEGACY showed how convincing digital faces could be, so de-aging Mark, Carrie, and Harrison wouldn't be that difficult anymore.

I'm on the other side. I am really excited about JJ doing this. I loved his Star Trek, MI Ghost Protocol, Super 8 & Lost. The only thing that bummed me out was that it looks like Ben Affleck was the runner up. I would love to see his take on Star Wars. Maybe he will get the next episode.
Now we can look forward to casting news soon. I really hope they bring back some of the original characters.
And it's great some of us are finally making our way from the sci fi expo forum to this one.....great to see y'all here!!!!
