Since I am friends with the writer of this film (Todd Farmer), it wouldn't be appropriate for me to review it, as I'd most likely be biased. Therefore I present the following review by Casey. I will say that I personally loved the film, and was blown away by the 3-D effects. If you asked my opinion, I would absolutely tell you it rocks. - Mark Walters (webmaster, Bigfanboy.com)
Is anyone out there aware that My Bloody Valentine is in fact a remake? It's got me wondering because I always thought that the original is down at the bottom of the barrel compared to the likes of Halloween and Friday the 13th. Granted I watch it every year because honestly I consider it a good flick. Always a good USA Up All Night showing the weekend before Valentine's Day, and not to mention something for those of us that frankly have nothing better to do on that day than stay in and watch cheesy "B" horror flicks, because let's face it we have no girlfriends and no life... and mostly no money.
However I still caught the flick thinking that this was one that they may be able to improve upon. Now for those of us that have seen the original movie we need some serious Eternal Sunshine treatment or else the movie is ruined for us because we can predict the so called shock ending that they try to give us.
What we have here kiddies is a "re-imagining" of the tale of Tom (Jensen Ackles), Axel (Kerr Smith), Sarah (Jaime King), and Harry Warden in the Hanniger Mines. The Characters are here but what has changed is the location of the town. What was originally Valentine Bluff is now Harmony.
The flick starts off 10 years earlier where a mine explosion has trapped our killer "Harry Warden" in the mines, and he survived by killing off all the others that were buried with him down there. After going on a killing spree in the hospital, he targets the one that he holds responsible for the cave in, Tom Hanniger (Ackles), who is the son of the mine's owner. The only ones that survive the massacre are Tom, Sarah, Axel and Irene.
10 years later Harry Warden returns to town for revenge, and a body count ensues while the viewers are reeled into the love triangle that the story entails.
Okay kiddies, first off the main selling point of this flick is the fact that it's being released in 3-D. I hate to break it to you but that is really a gimmick, as I felt that it was unnecessary for the flick. I admit that the scenes in 3-D were really cool, especially the naked girl and some of the deaths, but it felt that it was done more to help sell the film than it was for the movie.
Another thing I noticed is that the film was over the top on content. Where the original relied on suspense and lighting (mostly due to the budget) this one goes all out and gives us the shock and torture that (like it's 1980's counterpart) is following the trend of its times. Some examples are simple, such as a high body count and gore for the sake of gore. We even have a moment where a female victim goes through an entire scene running from the villain stark naked... okay, that was pretty cool, but the fact of the matter was in the recent Halloween movie we had a scene where the killer fights a intended victim, and she has no top on. It felt like this film was simply trying to top it by having the victim be fully nude, and adding to the torture porn trend that we have seen a lot of lately.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the gratuitous nudity, and the scene where we see someone getting his jaw ripped off and it flying toward the screen... or the unnecessary midget slaughter scene, because it is what the people want, and it's what I want too.
All in all My Bloody Valentine 3-D does deliver on all of what It advertised. Unfortunately for me I am a fan of the original so I had figured out the ending of the remake 15 minutes into the film, but for those of you that have not seen the original (which sadly is very few), this movie is a good date movie for ya. So enjoy, but I don't recommend too much popcorn this time out. For those of you at the movie bars, have a round for me
