For me, the golden days of the Avengers will always be the Kurt Busiek/George Perez run.
Big stories, a great cast, a lot of Avengers history while moving the book forward. Nothing less than awesome. Plus, George Perez managed to stay on the book without missing a beat for over year before coming back and finishing his run.
The good old days.
A great run, with great writing and great art. Just great. GREAT.
Of course the book became dry. An ever changing art roster and stories that never really pushed anything forward really hurt the book.
Oh, and...Triatholon? UH.....HUH.
So when it was announced Brian Bendis was taking over the book with "regular artist" Dave Finch to Disassemble the team, I was one of the few that went "HELL YEAH!"
Kill 'em ALL Bendis!!!!
Finally something was going to HAPPEN in the book! Characters were going to die. The status quo was actually going to CHANGE. The Avengers were going to be about BIG stories that they should always have been about!
Right?
Well..the excitement didn't last for long..
I was absolutely onboard when Bendis was putting the Sentry and Spiderman on the Avengers. Marvel's most powerful hero and Marvel's most popular loveable hero...WHY NOT??
Hell, putting Wolverine in his 87th monthly book was ok with me. Shake the sh*t out of the book Marvel/Bendis!
I eagerly awaited the first issue of New Avengers. The artwork was going to look fresh and not from 1978. Digital effects. New members that have never been on the team before. I had never been this stoked about the Avengers since Ultron Unlimited.
What followed was a series of stories that did nothing but tie into the "next big Marvel event". The first story arc, 'Breakout, was less about Marvel's villians escaping from prison and the Avengers hunting them down but more about how sassy Maria Hill is and how "Things don't feel right," says Luke Cage. "I feel like we're being set up for something BIGGER" he continues.
And that's all the New Avengers became. Story after story of SETUP. Look back through your issues and TPB's. Being "Set up for something bigger" is mentioned an awful lot. Each story arc is used as a tie in or bridge to House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion, and now Dark Reign.
NOTHING IS HAPPENING IN THE AVENGERS.
When are we going to see stories except flashbacks and reactions to the "big events"? What happend to the big Avengers event story happening IN THE ACTUAL AVENGERS BOOK??!?!!
Why am I looking back at the last 10-15 issues of New Avengers/Mighty Avengers and it looks like the main cast are Skrull imposters and the Illuminati? Seriously, if you're a new reader for the Avengers and you pick up a random issue of the Avengers for the last 2 years...THERE IS NO JUMPING ON POINT!!! You'd have no idea what was going on without shelling out 4 or 5 bucks for an issue of Secret Civil House of Crisis or something.
Really....who CARED???
Who the hell is the Mysterio looking guy from this alternate New Avengers #1 cover?!?!!
Seriously, Bendis. Who the F**K IS that guy?!
Ok...I'm rambling.
And I'm getting angry.
And it's been a LONG time since I've been this agitated about a comic book. Seriously. Spiderman: Chapter 1 didn't even bug me this much.
See you next Friday.
