SHANGHAI Gong Li (Anna Lan-Ting) and John Cusack (Paul Soames) star in Mikael Håfström's Shanghai. Preview by Mark Walters This 1940's period piece revolves around an American ex-patriot (John Cusack) who returns to a Japanese-occupied Shanghai just four months before Pearl Harbor due to the death of his friend. While searching for answers, he finds romance and unravels a large secret involving his own government. Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li co-star in this film by Mikael Håfström ( 1408). Gong Li stars as Anna Lan-Ting in Mikael Håfström's Shanghai. Oddly enough, this film was supposed to shoot early 2008 in China, but the authorities blocked them just weeks before production was set to begin. This meant walking away from sets that had been built at a cost of $3 million. Weinstein Co. shifted the shoot to London and Thailand, where sets were built re-creating Shanghai's old colonial architecture. Chow Yun-Fat stars as Anthony Lan-Ting in Mikael Håfström's Shanghai.
